Texas Instruments is banking on the growing popularity of VoWLAN -- enough so to offer WLAN chips that fit into mobile handsets. Other companies are already in the field: Last year Broadcom and Philips Semiconductor introduced low-power 802.11b chips for mobile handsets- a single integrated IC combining the WLAN, Bluetooth, and GSM transceiver. TI, which expects 10 million mobile WLAN-enabled phones to ship this year.
In total, an 802.11b/g offering takes three chips and a full-blown 802.11a/b/g offering, four.
